SAN ANTONIO – So much repetition and attention to detail is put into repeating each movement for a performance.

That’s why when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, it was such a big blow to performance artists like the dancers of the San Antonio Children’s Ballet.

“A lot of these dancers were wondering when they were going to be able to dance again,” said Vanessa Bessler, artistic director and founder of the San Antonio Children’s Ballet. “Not just in the studios, but on the big stage.”

Bessler said last March that everything had stopped for their dancers. They had to learn to train on Zoom, to distance themselves socially on the floor, and to dance with a mask.

“At first it was quite difficult to breathe with a mask on, but I think once you get used to it it gets a lot easier,” said Arabela Alvarado, 13, of the Children’s Ballet. of San Antonio. “And I think it’s also important in ballet because it helps you build your endurance.”

After more than a year of practicing virtually, then switching to virtual performance, the dancers will finally be back in front of a live audience.

The San Antonio Children’s Ballet will perform “Swan Lake” at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts on May 21-22. Dancers aged 3 to 21 will finally be able to showcase all their hard work and the hours they devote to their art.

“In the studios, you teach them how to dance, you teach them the technique, but it’s only on stage that they become artists,” Bessler said. “It’s more of an artistic experience and when you have a camera in front of you you can take multiple takes and start over,” said Kate Thomas, 16, of the San Antonio Children’s Ballet. “But when it’s live it’s a hit and it’s definitely more fun.”
