Oscar Stocks, a 12th grade student at Scots All Saints College, will attend the camp in Sydney.

Oscar was selected for the Regional Youth Orchestra, having applied through the Mitchell Conservatorium.

This orchestra meets twice a year for rehearsals and will perform together at a music festival later in the year in Grafton.

Its first camp, the Australian World Orchestra Camp, is starting in a few weeks.

Oscar said this camp will feature professional orchestra members, who will lead workshops with young musicians. Oscar will attend the workshops and perform at a concert at the end of the camp.

He said the orchestra includes musicians from all over the world, including Europe, and said it would be an incredible experience to play alongside such talented musicians.

Unsurprisingly, he said the application process was quite difficult.

The candidates had to audition. They were sent a piece of music that they had to rehearse, then record, then submit.

Oscar, who plays the French horn, submitted his piece and said he found out that it was accepted about two or three days ago.

“It was pretty impressive, but it was a really good feeling,” he said.

“It’s a huge opportunity for me,” he said, adding that he would gain a lot from being a part of it.

“Just the chance to play alongside these experienced artists and attend the workshops.”

He said he hoped to become a professional artist himself.

Oscar said he hopes to study a Bachelor of Music at Griffith University or the University of Melbourne next year.

He developed his love for music in 8th grade and since then has continued his education under the guidance of Campbell Barnes, and said he has learned a lot.

Oscar said he was really looking forward to the camp and the overall experience.

“It should be a lot of fun, and the opportunity to play with and learn from professional artists is just amazing.”
