Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra prepares for first concert in nineteen months

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tuning their instruments together for the first time in nineteen months. The Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra had its first practice since the pandemic last night. The orchestra, preparing for their concert this weekend called Returning to Ruby.

Notes booming, again filling the Ruby Diamond concert hall as violinists, cellists and flautists pick up their instruments.

“Going so long without being able to play, it drove me crazy.” Timpanist Nathan Tingler recalled the untimely end of the 2020 Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra season.

“I remember being on stage and feeling absolutely downtrodden when we decided to end the season. Of course we needed it, it was necessary, but I felt really bad, ”Tingler recalls.

Last season, the Tallahassee virtuosos relied on virtual performances.

“It’s so much easier when you are next to your colleagues. You get along better, you feel better. Doing it from a distance was really a challenge and of course you are not playing for an audience but for a purpose and we all had to adapt to this new environment, ”said Darko Butorac, Music Director of the Orchester symphonique de Tallahassee. But now the orchestra is back, starting this season with a collection of classical music.

“Brahm’s first symphony is like hearing a journey through sound, moving from a place of darkness, anxiety and uncertainty to ultimate triumph and achievement and I thought it was was a suitable way out of COVID-19 and back to live music, ”Butorac, argued.

For performers, nothing beats playing together on stage.

“It’s not just the volume, it’s the color, it’s the weight, the depth of being in the middle of that sound on stage is something really special,” said Butorac.
