Rail services disrupted as train drivers go on strike
Train services were halted on Sunday due to a strike by train drivers over a pay dispute.
Members of the TransPennine Express Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union have walked out, with further shutdowns planned in the coming weeks.
The action resulted in a ‘significant’ reduction in services, hitting travellers, including fans traveling to the Leeds v Manchester United Premier League match.
The union said the strike had strong support.

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said: ‘RMT’s TransPennine Express driver members are strong again today in their fight for a pay deal that recognizes the growing cost of living crisis facing workers.
“RMT has made it clear that those at the forefront of our public services, who have worked throughout to keep Britain moving during Covid, should not now undermine their standard of living.
A statement from the company said: “We advise customers not to travel on the majority of routes and to plan carefully if journeys are necessary.
“Those attending major events, including the Leeds United vs Manchester United game, should seek alternative transport where possible.”
The RMT announced new strikes on February 27 and March 6.
