EDINBURGH — University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Ballet Folklórico staged the opening night of a multi-show program at the University of Edinburgh’s Performing Arts Complex on Friday, with help from UTRGV Mariachi Juvenil Aztlan and Grupo Galán who have played the accompanying music for the dancers’ choreography.

The folklórico last played his Alegría show in 2020 just before the pandemic, skipping 2021 and has since scaled back productions to avoid huge crowds, but with mandates slowly lifted and society trying to return to some normality at the middle of the omicron variant, it seemed like a good time for a comeback. Although it is not without challenges.
