Oh, flying shoes! at the Rockport Opera House on Saturday
ROCKPORT – Belfast Flying Shoes, Rockport Opera House and the City of Rockport present a special community dance and counter dance at Rockport Opera House on Saturday November 19, featuring the music of Wild Asparagus, the influential counter-dance group Western Massachusetts dance.
The evening kicks off at 6:30 p.m., with Chrissy Fowler and Lisa Newcomb calling a community dance to upbeat music from the All Comers Band, which welcomes musicians of all ages, instruments and skill levels. Tunes posted on belfastflyingshoes.org, and the band will warm up at 6am.
George Marshall will call the 8 p.m. counter dance, featuring music from Wild Asparagus, a talented quartet of musicians whose innovative arrangements have inspired dancers for decades, at their dance home in Greenfield, Massachusetts, and around the world. Vermont fiddler Becky Tracy is joined by a husband and wife duo, David Cantieni on winds and Ann Percival on piano and guitar. George Marshall plays accordion and bodhran in addition to calling. They are sure to rock the Opera!
The dances will include simple and accessible community dances for all ages, and contras with lark/robin role terms as well as some couple dances like waltz, polska and schottische. Everyone is welcome!
The Rockport Opera House is located at 6 Central Street in downtown Rockport. Admission for the community dance is $1 for children and $2 for adults. Suggested admission for the counter dance is $15. Pay what you can, whether it’s less or more. Masks are encouraged. For more information and the full Community Care Policy visit www.belfastflyingshoes.org or contact [email protected]
