Hui He to make history in Shanghai with Double Bill
Hui He is about to make history at the Shanghai Grand Theater by singing both “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” on the same night.
The soprano, who made her debut as Santuzza in “Cavalleria Rusticana” in the 1999-2000 season, will reprise the role for the first time in 22 years. The soprano will also make her debut as Nedda in Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci”.
The performances will take place on September 3 and 5 and will include a semi-scenic version conducted by Martin Constantine and music conducted by M ° Xu Zhong.
In a statement, the soprano said, “I am incredibly happy to come back and sing for Chinese audiences and bring these two strong and passionate characters to them. I finally have the opportunity to sing Santuzza again, a role that I have never ceased to love and that I remember very well. Today, I can bring her back to life thanks to my experience as an artist and actress. Nedda is a new friend, a character with beautiful musical moments, who also needs a big and powerful theatrical personality.
Hui He is the last soprano to sing both roles in the same performance following the historic tours of Maria Jose Siri and Aleksandra Kurzak, who became the first two sopranos in Arena di Verona history to sing the roles in the same performance.
