What there is to know

  • “Frankenstein”, presented by LA Opera
  • The Theater at Ace Hotel on October 28 and 29, 2022
  • Limited tickets are still available

Watching a well-known character from a novel enter the world of cinema and then, a short time later, in the rest of the world, go from a literary figure to an icon visible everywhere?

Considering the whole arc of Frankenstein’s Monster, and how it started as a creation of author Mary Shelley, then, just over 13 decades later, found the superstar as a horror legend on the first line from Universal Pictures, would amount to tracing its terrifying history. over the past two centuries and more.

Today, we see this tall, heavy, boastful man everywhere: decorating homes in October, on the front of brightly colored candy wrappers, and just about anywhere an instantly recognizable character is required.

You can’t time travel to the early 19th century when Mrs Shelley wrote ‘Frankenstein’, or the early 1930s when the film, starring Boris Karloff, was made, but you can head to a local time machine of sorts for an ultra-atmospheric sepia movie night.

For LA Opera presents the film at the Ace Hotel Theater on October 28 and 29, which means you’ll watch it in a baroquely realized space that was built just a few years before Universal’s “Frankenstein” was filmed.

It’s a historic place to revisit vintage film, which will be accompanied by an orchestra composed and conducted by Michael Shapiro.

“This 1931 horror masterpiece was originally released without a musical score, which inspired composer Michael Shapiro to fill the void by creating a new soundtrack,” LA Opera shares.

The fresh music from a film that will celebrate its centenary in less than 10 years feels like an exciting new chapter in the arc of Frankenstein’s monster, a character who has bewitched readers and captivated audiences through the ages by raising questions. about life, death and immortality.

There are a few tickets left for both screenings; find out how to buy yours now.
