The Canadian Opera Company invites the public to three new productions on stage at the Four Seasons Center for the Performing Arts, as part of its 2021/2022 season: Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini, La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amédée Mozart.

“With our digital downfall, it has been wonderful to be able to help artists, creators and technicians return to the stage and share their talents with audiences from coast to coast,” said COC CEO , Perryn Leech. “Today, we’re excited to announce even more ways to access the best of Canadian opera, as we reintroduce in-person programming to our theater. This winter.”

The following productions will be presented to the public in winter and spring:

A COC production

February 4 – 25, 2022

When the life of young Cio-Cio-San in Nagasaki collides with US Naval Officer Pinkerton, the devastating consequences that ensue give rise to one of Puccini’s most powerful and unforgettable operas. Madama Butterfly explores the journey to femininity and the impossible choices a young woman faces, caught between cultures.

A COC production, co-produced with Houston Grand Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago

April 23 – May 20, 2022

One of Verdi’s most famous and popular operas, La Traviata features breathtaking arias and gripping drama. The COC’s acclaimed production brings 1850s Paris to life with spectacular party scenes, gorgeous period costumes, and moving moments of love and heartbreak.

The Magic Flute, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

A COC production

May 6 – 21, 2022

Tamino is on a quest to rescue the kidnapped Princess Pamina in Mozart’s timeless fairy tale opera. He’s aided along the way by Papageno, his comedic sidekick, and – of course – a magical instrument. Audiences are transported to this signature COC production full of starry skies and maze of gardens, fantastic creatures and deliciously imaginative costumes.

Full details on the cast and creative teams will be announced in October 2021, along with more information on a new subscription package that goes on sale on October 14, 2021.
